Karachi police intensify security

KARACHI, Pakistan, April 27 (UPI) -- Senior police officials in Karachi have established a special unit for guarding diplomatic missions and foreigners.

The Daily Times reported on April 26 that Superintendent of Police Kamran Fazl has been appointed to head the new Foreign Security Cell Karachi.

The city has seen a number of violent terrorist incidents, most recently on April 11 when a suicide bomber killed at least 57 people and wounded 80 others during prayers in a park. Violence in the city has been rising since the 2001 terrorist attacks on the U.S. In 2002 Karachi police clashed with suspected al-Qaida militants. The city also suffered two bomb attacks on foreigners, an attempt on the life of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, and the notorious kidnapping and killing of U.S. Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.
