EU lawmakers slam 'illegal' CIA activities

BRUSSELS, April 26 (UPI) -- The CIA was responsible for kidnapping and detaining terrorist suspects in the European Union and governments knew it, a senior lawmaker said Wednesday.

Highlighting cases in Sweden, Bosnia and Italy, the first interim report from the European Parliament's probe into alleged illegal CIA activities concluded that it was unlikely European governments did not know of the American intelligence agency's unlawful operations.

Claudio Fava, who drafted the assembly's report, lashed out at Sweden for handing over two terrorist suspects to American agents in 2001. The two detainees were allegedly transferred to Egypt where they were tortured. The Italian lawmaker also said it was hard to believe that Rome was not aware of a 2003 CIA operation in Milan, where suspect Abu Omar was abducted in broad daylight.

In his report, Fava called on the 25 member states to tighten laws about how their secret services operate and how they monitor foreign aircraft using European airspace.
