U.S. sanctions harm Iran's civil aircraft

TEHRAN, April 25 (UPI) -- The International Civil Aviation Organization in Canada has investigated and verified Iran's complaint about U.S. sanctions on the sale of parts to Iran.

Fars News Agency reported on April 23 that Iranian State Aviation Organization head Nourollah Rezaei-Niyaki said that the International Civil Aviation Organization promised to follow up the issue of U.S. sanctions on the sale of civilian airliner parts.

Rezaei-Niyaki also said that as far as the Bush administration approving Iran's request to establish direct Tehran-New York flights, "American officials have not yet responded to Iran in this respect."

According to Rezaei-Niyaki, during the current Iranian year, which began on March 21, the government has allocated $500 million to expanding Iran's commercial air fleet, and that "this credit will be distributed between the governmental and private sectors in an equal manner."

If Iran follows through on the plan, the country's passenger commercial fleet, currently numbering 117 planes, would add an additional 13 aircraft by the end of the year.
