DRS gets Iraq communications contract

NEW YORK, April 26 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has awarded a $222 million contract to DRS Technologies for communications services in Iraq.

The two-year deal calls for the New Jersey company to provide integrated, open-standard command-and-control and Information Technology infrastructure for the Army and multinational forces in Iraq.

The contract announced Tuesday is a follow-on to previous contracts awarded last year and in 2004 for communications support for both the multinational forces and the former provisional authority.

The work on the project will be parceled out to DRS Technical and Management Services in Maryland and DRS Spacelink in Dulles, Va.

Raytheon, Information Management Group, Oberon Associates and Artel are subcontractors.

DRS' Daniel Rodrigues said in the company announcement that the contract was a positive reflection of the previous work DRS had performed in Iraq on both the design and operation of communications systems and the management of the high-tech IT networks.

"Our technical engineering and support solutions as well as the depth of our team's experience provide a reliable, proven and unique resource to the U.S. Army," he said.

DRS also supplies the rugged Appliqué Computer Systems that are mounted on Army tanks and armored vehicles currently operating in Iraq.
