Canada gives grants to boost anti-terror

WASHINGTON, April 21 (UPI) -- The Canadian government Friday announced a $2 million program of aid to assist Caribbean and Asian countries in their fight against terror financing.

In a statement, the Canadian embassy in Washington said the money would be spent in close cooperation with the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to deliver projects with a lasting impact in these regions.

The Caribbean Financial Action Task Force and the Asia/Pacific Group on Money Laundering will help identify needs and priorities among their member countries, the statement said.

"Canada plays a leadership role in the fight against terrorist financing," said Minister of Finance James Flaherty. "This government is committed to ensuring we remain at the forefront of this effort."

He said the projects chosen would be ones that reinforce anti-terrorist financing bodies, strengthen investigative and prosecutorial authorities, and support partnerships with the private sector on effective measures to counteract terrorist financing.
