Security firm says spam email from Russia dropping

MOSCOW, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Spam email from from Russia fell in the second quarter of this year, dropping it from seventh to ninth place among the world's spammers, a security firm says.

In a report by Russia's Kaspersky Lab, China remains the world's largest spammer with a share of 23.1 percent of global spam, followed by the United States at 16.8 percent and South Korea at 12.6 percent, RIA Novosti reported Tuesday.

In comparison, Russia's share in worldwide spam-email production fell from 3.2 percent to 2.6 percent in the period surveyed, Kaspersky Lab said.

However, the figures in the report from Kaspersky are at odds with a recent finding by The Spamhaus Project, an international non-profit that tracks spam operations and lobbies governments for effective anti-spam legislation.

On its website, the project ranked Russia third among countries producing and exporting spam, after the United States and China.
