WASHINGTON, April 9 (UPI) -- The remains of an Army corporal listed as missing in action since the Korean War were identified and returned to his family, the U.S. Defense Department said.
Army Cpl. Patrick R. Glennon of Rochester, N.Y., will be buried Wednesday at Arlington National Cemetery, Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office said Monday in a release.
On Nov. 1, 1950, Glennon and others in G Company, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, were in a defensive position along the Nammyon River near Unsan, North Korea, when they were attacked by Chinese forces, the Pentagon said. Glennon was listed as missing in action.
In April 2007, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea handed over to U.S. officials six boxes of remains of U.S. service personnel recovered from areas near Unsan, where Glennon was last seen, the Defense Department said. Among the remains were metal ID tags with Glennon's name and other material evidence.
To identify the remains, Pentagon scientists and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory used circumstantial evidence and forensic tools such as dental records and mitochondrial DNA, which matched Glennon's cousins, the Pentagon said.
