India backs green energy networks

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- A proposal by New Delhi on climate innovation centers was met with a warm reception by participants at a climate conference in Denmark, Indian officials said.

Indian Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said his proposal to establish a network to share and develop green technology was met with a warm reception at the 12-day summit in Copenhagen, Denmark.

"It is my understanding that the Delhi Declaration on technology development has been very substantially accepted and will form the basis of the Copenhagen agreement when it is finally released," he told the Press Trust of India.

Ramesh said it was important that the delegates at Copenhagen reach some form of agreement on climate change by Tuesday so world leaders can move forward with a political statement when they arrive for the conference.

Climate talks hit a snag when representatives from developing nations boycotted talks for a brief time Monday. They returned when industrialized nations agreed to hold separate talks on the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012.

World leaders are expected to reach some form of agreement on addressing climate change by the end of the week.
