March 30 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts woman had her missing class ring returned after she lost it more than four decades ago.

Janet Faircloth Kentros of Peabody never expected to see the engraved high school class ring again after her then-boyfriend misplaced the keepsake in 1971.

"He had it on his key chain and lost his keys," she told CBS Boston. "So the ring was gone, as far as we were concerned, forever."

Decades later someone at Bishop Fenwick High School discovered Kentros' long lost ring near the school's athletic track.

School staff began scouring old yearbooks to look for its original owner and managed to track down the former student using the initials engraved inside the ring.

"When I went down and looked at the inside of the ring and saw JMF, those are my initials, and I knew right away it was mine," she said.

Was in disbelief that not only had the ring been found after so many years, but also it still fit her finger.

"I was just shocked," she told the Boston Globe. "It's in really good shape. It was amazing to me that they would find it."

She said the school has been remodeled multiple times since she attended and speculated a bird or some other animal must have unearthed the ring and moved it near the track.

Kentros was ecstatic to be reunited with her ring, but the story also provided a happy ending for the boyfriend who lost it.

"That boyfriend has now been my husband for 42 years so he's off the hook now," she said.
