SYRACUSE, N.Y., July 14 (UPI) -- New York state transportation officials said a highway sign that misspelled Syracuse as "Sryacuse" was corrected Thursday.

Gene Cilento, a spokesman for the New York State Department of Transportation, said the "Sryacuse Airport" sign on the on-ramp to Interstate 481 South from Bear Road was taken down Wednesday night and replaced Thursday morning with a sign reading "Syracuse Airport."

Photos of the sign went viral Wednesday after drivers noticed the typo and posted about it on social media.

Cilento said he did not know exactly when the misspelled sign was put in place, but he told CNY Central the amount of time it spent at the side of the road was "not long."

"It was obviously an error," Cilento told Syracuse.com. "It was immediately addressed. How it happened is under review."

He said the sign was replaced at no additional cost to the DOT.

Syracuse Airport responded to the misspelled sign on Twitter.

"Everyone makes a mistake," the tweet read.
