"The City [produces] thousands of signs each year, a mistake was made but it has now been fixed," a council representative wrote in a statement to the Gold Coast Bulletin.
The statement contained a typo of its own -- using the word "produce" instead of "produces."
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the error will not be repeated.
"That's getting fixed up; it shouldn't have happened," she said. "It's a mistake and it won't happen again."
Education Minister Kate Jones joked the makers of the sign "didn't have prep," or preschool. The state government announced earlier this week that preschool would be compulsory for all students starting in 2017.
Queensland was known on state license plates as the "Smart State" until 2012, when the slogan was tossed in favor of its more popular alternative, "Sunshine State."
