MOSCOW, July 22 (UPI) -- Organizers of a planned swim from Russia to Alaska said more than 50 swimmers from several countries are expected to attempt the feat.

The organizers said the swimmers will set out for the 68-mile swim across the Bering Strait Aug. 1 and will brave the 39-degree water for 15 to 20 minutes at a time before taking long breaks to ensure they are not harmed by the cold, ITAR-Tass reported Monday.

The swimmers will be outfitted with swimsuits, goggles and swim caps, the organizers said.
