Clark donates argyle sweater to charity

LITTLE ROCK, Ark., Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Wesley Clark said he will give the oft-derided argyle sweater he wore while campaigning to be the next U.S. president to charity.

The retired general has been changing his clothing style of late -- moving from the usual dark suits and tie to a softer image. That change included a gray argyle sweater, which quickly became the butt of many jokes. Clark's response was that what the sweater lacked in style, it made up for in warmth.

Clark said he planned to give the sweater to Liberty House, a shelter for homeless veterans in Manchester, N.H. The shelter has offered the sweater for bid on eBay. By late morning Monday, nearly 100 people had bid on the sweater, pushing the price to more than $5,300. Bidding closes Saturday night.

Clark is not formally taking part in Monday's Iowa caucuses, focusing instead on New Hampshire, where recent polls have found him drawing closer to front-runner Howard Dean in the campaign for the Democratic Party nomination for president.
