Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Saxophonist Joe Garland was born this day in 1903 in Norfolk, Va. Louis Armstrong once called Garland one of the greatest musicians he ever worked with. He wrote Glenn Miller's hit song "In the Mood" and Les Brown's band theme "Leapfrog." Garland died in 1977.

Piano powerhouse Oscar Peterson was born this day in 1925 in Montreal. Peterson remains one of the most technically proficient players in jazz, having recovered with amazing fortitude from a stroke several years ago that affected his left hand.


On this day in 1941, singer Peggy Lee made her first record with Benny Goodman's band in Chicago. The song, recorded for Columbia, was called "Elmer's Tune."

The Bobby Hutcherson quartet is at The Regattabar in Cambridge, Mass., through Saturday. Former Jefferson Airplane guitarist Craig Chaquico is at Scullers in Boston with his contemporary jazz band.


Guitarist Jimmy Bruno's trio is at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., tonight. Recently back from their U.S. State Department-Jazz Ambassador tour to India, Sri Lanka ,Thailand and the Maldives, flute player Jamie Baum, guitarist Kenny Wessel and bass guitarist Jerome Harris perform tonight at The Millennium Stage at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington.


Virginia's Jazz Norfolk series continues tonight with the Jae Sinnett trio at the Chrysler Museum of Art.

There's also "Late Night Jazz" live at the Blues Alley Bistro Cafe.


Singer Barbara Rosene is at Nighttown in Cleveland tonight.

Susie Hansen's Latin Jazz Band is at Heritage Park in Cerritos tonight. The Vince Lateano trio featuring pianist Matt Clark is at Jazz at Pearl's in San Francisco.

Mark Levine and The Latin Tinge are in Xalapa and Veracruz, Mexico, for the next three days for a series of festivals and clinics.


On the recording front...


Cuban guitarist-singer Eliades Ochoa -- a mainstay of the original Buena Vista Social Club band -- is out today with "Estoy Como Nunca" on the Higher Octave World label. The Quarteto Patria also is featured, as are special guests including trumpeter Anibal Avila, guitarist David Hidalgo from Los Lobos and Raul Malo of Mavericks fame.
