Gene Krupa, the drummer who made Benny Goodman's band swing, swing, swing with his solo feature on the song "Sing, Sing, Sing," was born this date in 1909 in Chicago.

Trombonist Jack Teagarden, the pride of Vernon, Texas, died this date in 1964 in New Orleans. He did much to popularize the trombone as a jazz instrument.

On the New York jazz scene, guitarist Larry Carlton's group opens a weeklong run at the Blue Note tonight. Drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts brings his quartet into The Village Vanguard tonight through Sunday. Singer-pianist Mose Allison's trio is at Iridium all week. Psyco On Da Bus featuring Tony Allen is at The Knitting Factory tonight. Drummer Winard Harper's quintet is at the Zinc Bar tonight and Wednesday. The Duke Ellington Orchestra follows David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Centennial Band tonight at Birdland.

On the New Orleans jazz scene, Photon is at the Dragon's Den tonight. The Jazz Vipers are at El Matador. Drummer James Alsanders' Jazz Project is at the Funky Butt. Pete Fountain is in the spotlight at his club in the New Orleans Hilton. Gregg Stafford leads the band at Preservation Hall tonight. The Richie Moten trio is in the Royal Sonesta Hotel's Mystick Den. KHORE with Roland Guerin, Jason Marsalis and Derek Douget is at Snug Harbor tonight.


In California tonight, Joanne Brackeen and Ravi Coltrane are at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles tonight through Sunday. The Chris Williams quintet is at Steamers Jazz Café in Fullerton tonight. Drummer John Patitucci's quartet featuring drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez is at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood all week. Pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba's trio is at Yoshi's in Oakland tonight through Sunday. Drummer Ron Marabuto's trio is at Jazz at Pearl's in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood tonight.

On the recording front...

-- Mosaic Records releases another in its series of significant compilation recordings today. This one is "The Blue Note Stanley Turrentine Quintet/Sextet Studio Sessions." The five CD set is available only via mail order from Mosaic.

-- Verve releases "Getz for Lovers," a compilation of some of his tenor saxophonist Stan Getz's most beautiful recorded ballads. It's one in a series of reissues celebrating what would have been his 75th birthday year. "Gets Plays Jobim: The Girl From Ipanema" is due out on Feb. 26 and "The Very Best of Stan Getz" will follow on March 12.

-- Guitarist Dave Fiuczynski's FuzeLicious Morsels label has re-released the first two CD's by Screaming Headless Torsos. The pair are the band's eponymous debut record, originally released on Warner/Discovery Records, which has been retitled "1995" and "Live!!" The latter session was recorded at the Knitting Factory in 1996 but was originally released only in Japan on VideoArtsMusic. The new version of "1995" contains two previously unreleased tunes: "Something" by George Harrison and "Little Wing" by Jimi Hendrix. Fiuczynski reports that Screaming Headless Torsos are working on their third CD with a new vocalist, Freedom Bremner. Fiuczynski and singer Dean Bowman are also working on a new CD under the band name "Vox Populi".
