Trumpeter Henry "Hot Lips" Levine was born this day in 1907 in London. In 1906, he replaced Nick LaRocca in the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. He was also a bandleader and longtime staff musician for NBC.

On the New York jazz scene, Brazilian trumpeter Claudio Roditi is in the Monday night spotlight at the Blue Note tonight. The Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra featuring Lew Tabackin is at Birdland tonight. The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra is at the Village Vanguard. The Chris Byars Octet is at the Fat Cat tonight. Singer Sheila Jordan and bassist Cameron Brown team up at the Knitting Factory. Singer Whitney Marchelle and the Cotton Club All-Stars Big Band are at the Cotton Club in Harlem tonight.


In and around Boston, "Stomp" drummer Tomas Fujiwara leads a quartet with trumpeter Taylor Ho Bynum, saxophonist Steve Lehman, and bassist Timo Shanko at the Jimmaize Art Club in Cambridge tonight and on the following two Monday nights.


The New Millennium/New Music series presents pianist Misha Mengelberg's ICP Orchestra led by pianist Misha Mengelberg tonight at the Chicago Cultural Center's Preston Bradley Hall. The Center also presents a special free screening tonight of Jean Cocteau's 1930 experimental film "Blood of a Poet" tonight at the Claudia Cassidy Theater. This classic silent film will be accompanied by Ensemble Noamnesia performing the world premiere of Gene Coleman's original score.

Elsewhere on the Chicago jazz scene, singer-pianist Patricia Barber's trio is at the Green Mill tonight. Yoko Noge's Jazz Me Blues band is at HotHouse. Katherine Davis is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium tonight. Nadine Baxter is in the spotlight at Philander's in Oak Park.


In New Orleans tonight, Bob French and Friends are at Donna's tonight. Jason Marsalis is at the Funky Butt with his band. The Joe Krown Organ Combo is at Le Bon Temps Roule. Trumpeter Reginald Koeller leads the band at Preservation Hall tonight. Singer Charmaine Neville is at Snug Harbor. The Jazz Vipers are at the Spotted Cat. Brian Seeger's Jazz Hang band is at the Stationhouse Grille. The New Birth Brass Band is at the Storyville District Jazz Parlor.


On the California jazz scene, saxophonist Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Jazz Band is at The Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles tonight. The John-Carlos Perea Ensemble is at Yoshi's in Oakland. The Renegade Sidemen are at Anna's Place in Berkeley. In San Francisco, Frank Jackson is at the Cypress Club, Howard Wiley is at the Black Cat and Blue Bar, the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra is at Jazz at Pearl's in North Beach and Frank Jackson is at the Cypress Club. Cathi Walkup, Sharman Duran, Jennifer Lee, Elaine Lucia, Shanna Carlson and Daria team up for a CD release party at The Plush Room tonight.
