Report: N. Korea fund to be sent next week

SEOUL, April 6 (UPI) -- North Korea's frozen funds in a Macao bank will be sent to Pyongyang via a Hong Kong-based bank next week, a Seoul daily said Friday.

"The United States, China and the BDA (Banco Delta Asia) have agreed to transfer the funds to North Korea via a bank in Hong Kong for a smooth implementation of the Feb. 13 nuclear accord," the JoongAng Ilbo quoted a senior South Korean government official as saying.

The North Korean funds will likely be sent to the Bank of China in Hong Kong, the newspaper said.

The report comes amid growing doubts the North will meet the April 14 deadline to shut down its key nuclear plant, as agreed Feb. 13, because of a dispute over the transfer of some $25 million of the North's holdings in BDA accounts.

Washington has agreed to resolve the fund dispute, but the money transfer has been delayed due to "technical problems," causing North Korea's furious response.
