Sri Lanka rebels' navy HQ attacked

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, April 4 (UPI) -- The headquarters of the Tamil Tigers' sea force has been destroyed, according to Sri Lanka's air force.

Jets bombed and destroyed the rebel group's naval base in the northern area of Mullaithivu, the government said. The Tigers, however, have said that the attack was on a landmine victim charity.

"We took one target today. It was the Sea Tigers' headquarters, a fuel dump and vehicle parking area -- all completely destroyed," said air force spokesman Group Captain Ajantha de Silva.

The rebels claimed that they did not house their naval headquarters in the building that was attacked.

More than 50 people have been killed since last weekend as hostilities between the Tamil Tigers and the Sri Lankan government continue to escalate.
