German neo-Nazis plan series of marches

BERLIN, March 29 (UPI) -- Germany's neo-Nazi parties plan a series of marches for May 1, a day generally reserved for labor unions' speeches.

The far-right National Democratic Party of Germany, a party with ideological ties to Adolf Hitler's Nazis, has notified the government that it plans to hold demonstrations in four German cities, including Nuremberg, a former Nazi stronghold, and Erfurt in eastern Germany, where support for the NPD is strong.

The news surfaced Thursday after the far-left Left Party had made an official inquiry with the German government about planned right-wing demonstrations.

In Dortmund, "partyless nationalists" backed by the NPD and a Dutch neo-Nazi group also plan a demonstration. Two marches have also been planned for Berlin and Leipzig, but those have been canceled by the organizers, German online daily Netzeitung reported.
