U.S. criticizes Zimbabwe's Mugabe regime

WASHINGTON, March 28 (UPI) -- Zimbabwe's leader is determined to retain power at any price, the U.S. State Department said Wednesday.

The department called upon not just Zimbabweans, but all Africans, to get President Robert Mugabe to answer for the crimes his regime has committed in an effort to remain in control.

"It is time for Africans to publicly call Mugabe to account for his misrule," the State Department declared on the eve of the Presidents of the Southern African Development Community meeting in Dar es Salaam.

"The United States is deeply concerned about the detention of Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the Zimbabwe opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)," the State Department said, adding that the government needs to investigate attacks against him and punish those who are responsible.
