China's job market seen worsening

BEIJING, March 21 (UPI) -- Nearly half of those seeking jobs in China will not be able to find work, Japanese daily Asahi Shimbun reported Wednesday.

The Japanese newspaper said that while there will be about 24 million people seeking work in urban metropolitan regions across China, about half of them will not be able to find and work at all in the city.

Asahi quoted the country's labor and social security department officials stating that even though surging economic growth will create about 9 million new jobs, only about 1.2 million new paid positions will likely be available, even when openings made by those going into retirement are taken into account.

The daily pointed out that while China produced a record number of university graduates last year, about 30 percent of those with degrees were unable to find jobs. It added that employment prospects will become increasingly difficult even for those with higher education.
