Chinese PM to visit Japan next month

TOKYO, March 16 (UPI) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao plans to visit Japan next month to discuss the region's security arrangements and other issues, a Tokyo daily said Friday.

Wen will arrive in Tokyo on April 11 to meet Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper said, citing Tokyo government sources. Wen also plans to travel to Kyoto, Japan's ancient capital city, during his three-day visit, it said. This will be the first visit by a Chinese leader in about seven years since former Premier Zhu Ronji's trip in October 2000, the newspaper said.

China initially proposed a weeklong visit for Wen from April 9-15, but the trip was cut short because he decided to visit South Korea before flying into Japan. Wen canceled a planned appearance on Japanese television for direct interaction with the public, it said.

China and Japan remain at odds after Abe's claim that Japan did not coerce Asian women into serving as sex slaves during World War II.
