S.Korea seeks peace regime

SEOUL, March 12 (UPI) -- South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun Monday vowed to seek a peace regime on the Korean peninsula to replace the current armistice.

In a speech at an international journalists' meeting in Seoul, Roh said his country would try to transform the six-nation talks on North Korea's nuclear drive into a multilateral dialogue to discuss the establishment of a peace regime on the divided peninsula.

"The North Korean nuclear issue must be resolved peacefully. The armistice in Korea should also be converted into a peace regime," Roh said. "It is my belief that the six-party talks in Beijing should eventually evolve into a multilateral consultative body for peace and security cooperation in Northeast Asia."

The peninsula still remains technically in a state of war as the 1950-53 Korean War ended without a peace treaty. Their border is the world's last Cold War flashpoint with nearly two million troops on both sides.
