German and Russian soldiers side by side?

BERLIN, March 6 (UPI) -- The European Union is considering joint military operations with Russia in crisis regions, a German news magazine reported.

Javier Solana, the EU's foreign policy chief, wants to include Russia more strongly in the body's "conflict management," German news magazine Der Spiegel said in its latest issue.

Solana envisions joint peacekeeping operations, for example in the Kosovo or in the Republic of Moldova, where Russian soldiers are stationed in the Transnistria breakaway region. According to Der Spiegel, Moscow, behind closed doors, is very positive about Solana's initiative.

Germany, which currently holds the rotating six-month EU presidency, would not oppose cooperation with Russia, yet Berlin fears the issue could be accompanied by a fierce political debate in Germany.
