U.S. urged to take action on Darfur

WASHINGTON, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- A former Clinton aide said it is time for the United States to take action in the Darfur massacre.

Susan Rice, who was as special assistant to President Bill Clinton from 1995 to 1997 and director for the National Security Council from 1993-1997, said Khartoum should be given an ultimatum and the United States should actually act on it.

Rice, who is now a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute, said that "to allow another state to deter the U.S. by threatening terrorism would set a terrible precedent. It would also be cowardly, and in the face of genocide, immoral."

She proposed a four step plan that called for President Bush to immediately begin implementing "Plan B." She pushed for U.S. military action and measured the risks involved with any invasive plan against the risk that is being faced daily by the Africans in Darfur.
