S.Korea condoles Afghan terror victim

SEOUL, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- South Korea vowed Wednesday to press ahead with its support for the U.S.-led coalition forces in Afghanistan despite a deadly attack.

South Korean soldier, Sgt. Yoon Jang-ho, was killed Tuesday in a suicide bombing at the main gate of a U.S. base in Bagram, north of the capital Kabul, where U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney was visiting at the time.

Yoon, among 23 causalities from the attack, was the first South Korean victim of hostile fire since the Vietnam War.

In a statement, Seoul's Defense Ministry expressed "deep condolences" over the deaths of Sgt. Yoon and other victims, and "strongly denounces such a reckless, brutal terrorist act."

"Undaunted by the attack, South Korea will keep up humanitarian efforts toward a peace settlement in Afghanistan," it said. The two units of 205 South Korean medical and engineering corps are stationed in the country.
