Japan station gets CTBT approval

TOKYO, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- The United Nations' nuclear weapons watchdog approved a radionuclide station in Japan, the government said Monday.

The station was built in the premises of the Okinawa tracking and communication station of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. By getting the green light from the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization, the Japanese government said it will host 10 international monitoring systems in the country in the future.

"Japan regards the CTBT as an indispensable pillar of the nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament regime based on the Treaty on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation, and attaches importance to the early entry-into-force of the CTBT as one of the foremost issues in the field of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation," the government stated.
