Report: Al-Qaida planning British attacks

LONDON, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- More than 2,000 English-based al-Qaida supporters are planning suicide attacks, according to a British newspaper.

The terror threat in Britain is as high as never again since the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the Sunday Telegraph reported, citing a classified intelligence report.

"The scale of al-Qaida's ambitions toward attacking the United Kingdom and the number of U.K. extremists prepared to participate in attacks are even greater than we previously judged," the newspaper quoted the document as saying.

Afghanistan is the most important base for extremists planning attacks in Europe, the newspaper said, adding that al-Qaida was operating successfully in Iraq, while in Pakistan, the financial support for Islamist activities was growing.

London suffered a terrorist attack July 7, 2005, when several bombs exploded in the city's mass transit system. British security officials have previously said that they have prevented other attacks.
