Iraqi journalists protest U.S. raid

BAGHDAD, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Hundreds of Iraqi journalists protested Wednesday in Baghdad against a U.S. troop raid into the union's headquarters.

The demonstrators vowed to continue their demonstration until the U.S. forces release the guards they arrested and return seized equipment and property.

Union leaders complained that an American military unit stormed the Iraqi Press Association headquarters Tuesday and arrested ten guards, confiscating their licensed weapons.

They said the troops flung the union's furniture and confiscated equipment and other property.

Deputy head of the press syndicate Ali Oweid said a large number of Iraqi journalists and union members took part in the demonstration. He added the raid constitutes "humiliation to the Iraqi journalists and civil society organizations."

It was not immediately clear why the troops raided the press association in the Iraqi capital.
