Lebanon violates U.N. ceasefire

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Lebanon's army fired a round of anti-aircraft weapons while Israeli aircraft were detected over southern Lebanon, the United Nations said.

It was not known whether Israeli aircraft were hit, or whether the anti-aircraft fire was actually at an airplane, the United Nations said in a statement Wednesday.

U.N. spokeswoman Marie Okabe said the U.N. interim force in Lebanon "continues to monitor the situation in its area of operation and will release more details of this and other reported incidents as they become available."

The United Nations said it had no additional comment from UNIFIL, which is charged with monitoring the peace brokered by the U.N. Security Council after last summer's 34-day Israel-Hezbollah war.

"The Lebanese Army fired a round of anti-aircraft weapons today and there were a number of Israeli air violations over the United Nations peacekeepers' area of operation in the southern part of the country," the initial statement said.

Also Wednesday, Israeli Ambassador Dan Gillerman issued a letter to the U.N. Security Council, complaining Syria was passing arms to Hezbollah forces in Lebanon in order to rearm the militant group. Such transfers are in violation of a Security Council ban.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has stated the group had the right to gather arms in order to protect itself from Israeli incursions.
