Roh calls for Korean peace treaty

SEOUL, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun says this week's nuclear deal with communist North Korea would lead to inter-Korean talks on a peace treaty.

Roh, on a state visit to Spain, also vowed to take necessary steps to implement the landmark nuclear agreement reached Tuesday, saying it would help build a permanent peace on the divided Korean peninsula, according to Yonhap News Agency Wednesday.

The eventual establishment of a peace treaty will pave the way for Seoul's external credit rating to rise to the top level in the world, Roh was quoted as saying.

"A successful conclusion of an inter-Korean peace treaty would eliminate the (last) non-economic hurdle to South Korea's ascent to the top of the global credit rating ladder," he said.

South Korea is still technically in state of war with North Korea as their 1950-53 conflict ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.
