Germans march against neo-Nazism

DRESDEN, Germany, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Sixty-two years after the destruction of Dresden by Allied bombs, several thousand locals marched against surging neo-Nazism in eastern Germany.

Made up of thousands of candles laid down by several thousand citizens, the sentence "This city has (had) enough of Nazis" illuminated the square in front of the Dresden Schloss in the historic city center.

Dresden was reduced to rubble and 35,000 civilians died when U.S. and British bombers on the night of Feb. 13, 1945, flew bombing missions that lasted until the wee morning hours.

German neo-Nazi groups have tried in recent days to exploit the anniversary for their far-right propaganda, but on Tuesday late afternoon, some 4,000 Dresdeners marched in protest against a neo-Nazi demonstration taking place in another part of the city.

Elsewhere, violent leftists clashed with the neo-Nazis and later with police. Twelve protesters were arrested, according to police, but later released.
