S.Korea, China in history dispute

SEOUL, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- South Korea is calling on China to keep cool-headed in dealing with their latest territorial dispute, Seoul officials said Friday.

"We have stressed to the Chinese side that they should respond in a composed manner," a Seoul Foreign Ministry official said in a meeting with journalists.

Earlier, China protested against South Korean short track skaters who promoted Korea's historical claim to a mountain on the border between China and the Korean peninsula during the ongoing Winter Asian Games.

Five South Korean female short track players raised signs reading, "Mount Paekdu is our (Korean) territory" during an awards ceremony Wednesday.

"This incident is an accidental happening and shouldn't be interpreted politically," the ministry official said.
