German president to visit terrorist

BERLIN, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Germany is bickering over whether to pardon a far-left convicted terrorist as the German president considers visiting him.

Christian Klar was among the terrorists of the far-left, anti-capitalist Baader-Meinhof Gang responsible for the kidnapping, torture and assassination of several high-ranking individuals of the German business world. One of Klar's victims, Hanns-Martin Schleyer, head of the West German Employers' Federation, was tortured for weeks before he was put to death.

Klar, who is serving several life terms and has murdered nine people in his prison cell, has appealed for his release with German President Horst Koehler, who is mulling to visit the man, German daily Bild said Monday.

Several politicians of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union are opposed to releasing Klar for a lack of remorse.

Koehler is expected to double check whether Klar really has abolished his terrorist views. Only the president can grant the pardon.
