Russia boosts security after terror threat

MOSCOW, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Security officials in Moscow were put on high alert after they were tipped off about a possible terrorist attack in Russia's capital.

Russian security received information from "foreign partners" that terrorists may be planning attacks against Moscow's public transportation system, the FSB security service said in a statement televised Wednesday.

Police, security agents and bomb-sniffing dogs have been deployed to check the city's subway system, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti said.

Moscow's interior office, in charge of handling air and sea transport, has taken "all necessary precautions."

Also Wednesday, Russia's main cellular phone operators suspended services in the Moscow subway, a move observers say is connected to the terrorist threat.
