UNICEF staff member shot dead in Iraq

AMMAN, Jordan, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- A UNICEF staff member who worked to improve Iraq's education system has been killed in Baghdad.

"Janan Jabero was a brilliant engineer and had been a key part of UNICEF's school rehabilitation program in Iraq since 1999," the agency's country representative Roger Wright said Tuesday. "His death has cost Iraq's children a staunch advocate and we deeply mourn his loss."

An Iraqi, the 52-year-old Jabero was killed Monday while driving his car. He is survived by his wife and two children.

The U.N. Children's Fund currently employs 87 Iraqis to support education, health and social services throughout the country.

The UNICEF international staff left Iraq for Amman, Jordan, after the bombing of U.N. Baghdad headquarters that killed 22 people in 2003, including top envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello.
