New war in Arab world, says Amman paper

AMMAN, Jordan, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- The Arab world now has a new war, warned a Jordanian paper, adding; Somalia, an Arab League member resorted to a "Taliban solution" after other means failed.

The mass-circulation daily added in a commentary that reaching absolute poverty and chaos provided a historic opportunity for Ethiopia "to push Somalia into the sea and dividing it into two parts."

International conditions, it argued, are ripe for such a move since Washington has become the sole superpower in the world supporting an Ethiopian-Somali war to get rid of the Islamic courts.

The paper, described as independent but is partially owned by the government, said domestic conditions are also ripe for Ethiopia because the provisional Somali government wants Ethiopian support.

"And the regional conditions are ripe because Saudi Arabia and the Arab Gulf states don't want a neighbor like the Islamic courts that promise safe haven for the fundamentalist and extremist Islamist forces," it analyzed. It predicted a long war that will be fed by external financial and military support.

The paper claimed that according to the American vision, "it is an ideal situation to fight so-called terrorism," where Somalia will be a trap to collect the extremists. "In any case," it concluded, "extremism only fuels extremism, and the Somali example will be eligible for export, just as we saw in other examples."
