Abdullah, Olmert to discuss peace process

AMMAN, Jordan, June 7 (UPI) -- Jordan's King Abdullah will raise with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert proposals to reactivate the stalled peace process at their meeting Thursday.

A Jordanian official who spoke to United Press International on condition of anonymity said Wednesday that the king's proposals are based on the Road Map which was endorsed by the international community and stipulates the creation of a viable Palestinian state living in peace with Israel.

The source said Abdullah will also inform Olmert of Jordan's rejection of his unilateral separation plan.

The king will mainly stress the dangers of unilateral solutions to the Palestinians as well as the whole Middle East region.

Olmert is scheduled to hold talks with Abdullah in Amman within the framework of his efforts to promote his plan for unilateral separation from the Palestinians and the annexing of large Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

Olmert's visit to Amman will be the first by an Israeli prime minister in several years.

King Abdullah relayed his objection to Olmert's separation plan to U.S. President George Bush at a meeting in Washington last week.

Jordan fears that Olmert's plan would result in canceling the idea of creating an independent Palestinian state and destabilize the region, an issue of great concern to Jordan, home to the largest Palestinian refugee community.

Egypt shares Jordan's concerns, and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak made that clear to Olmert at their meeting last Sunday at Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

After the meeting, Olmert promised to give political negotiations with the Palestinians a chance.
