Five accused of seeking to infiltrate Iraq

AMMAN, Jordan, June 7 (UPI) -- The public prosecutor at Jordan's state security court filed charges against five people of seeking to infiltrate Iraq to carry out terrorist operations.

The indictment, issued Wednesday, said among the defendants is Omar Jamil Nazzal al-Khalayila, the nephew of al-Qaida chief in Iraq Ahmed Fadil Nazzal al-Khalayila, better known as Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

According to the indictment, the defendants left Jordan to Syria to join Arab fighters bound for Iraq to help the Sunni insurgency against government forces and U.S.-led troops.

The indictment said the defendants were accused of carrying out activities banned by the government and which exposed Jordan to hostile action and jeopardized its relations with a foreign country.

One of the defendants is on the run and will be tried in absentia, while the others will appear in court. The indictment said they were arrested on May 7 as they tried to cross into Syria.

The state security court is expected to look into the case later this month.
