Poland closes communist era secret service

WARSAW, Poland, May 25 (UPI) -- Poland has dissolved its military intelligence service in a bid to weed out communist-era spies.

Polish lawmakers voted 375 to 48 to do away with the old service, which has seen no reform since the fall of communism in 1989, and replace it with two new agencies, called the Military Intelligence Agency and the Military Counterintelligence Agency.

The services, which are no longer under the control of the Defense Ministry, will begin working in October and will employ military personnel as well as civilians.

Prospective employees will go through a screening process to ensure they have no ties to Soviet intelligence agencies or organized crime, according to German online daily Netzeitung.
