Steinmeier wraps up Middle East tour

DOHA, Qatar, May 25 (UPI) -- German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has been granted support for the international position on Iran in a six-nation Middle East tour.

Steinmeier wraps up the tour, which sought to gather regional support for the international consensus on the Iranian nuclear standoff, with talks in Qatar Thursday.

The talks will likely focus the ongoing impasse over Iran's controversial nuclear program and energy supply security, according to Deutsche Welle Online. Qatar, after Russia and Iran, has the world's third-largest natural gas reserves.

Steinmeier visited six Middle Eastern nations; he started his tour in Kuwait, then headed to Oman and the United Arab Emirates. He continued his six-nation tour in Saudi Arabia and in Bahrain. After his visit in Qatar, Steinmeier is due back in Berlin late Thursday.

Leaders in all countries had expressed their concern over Iran's nuclear ambitions, calling them a threat to stability in the region.
