Hamas denies involvement in Sinai bombings

CAIRO, May 24 (UPI) -- The Hamas-led Palestinian government denied any involvement by Hamas or Islamic Jihad in the Sinai bombings which have killed 120 people since 2004.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Zahhar told reporters Wednesday following a meeting with Arab League Secretary-General Amr Mousa that a statement by the Egyptian interior ministry revealing Palestinian links to the bombings "resulted in many impressions and assumptions but one thing is sure it did not mean Hamas or Islamic Jihad."

The interior ministry said Tuesday that Palestinians trained and financed the terrorist Egyptian groups which carried out the bombings which targeted Egyptian resorts on the Sinai peninsula.

The ministry said the commander of the terrorist group responsible for the latest attack in Dahab last April, Nasser Khamis, sent the bombers to Gaza for training on arms and explosives.

Zahhar said, "Some people and a handful of groups have extremist ideologies, but they are individuals who might be involved in the bombings."

"Our relations with Egypt are strong and warm and we hope ties with Jordan will be as good and at the same level," Zahhar added.

It was the first time that Egypt established a link between the Sinai bombings and Palestinian elements in Gaza Strip.

Jordan accused Hamas recently of smuggling arms into the kingdom and piling them up in order to use them in attacks on vital installations.
