Jordan for diplomacy over Iran nuke case

AMMAN, Jordan, May 17 (UPI) -- Jordan's King Abdullah has called for settling Iran's nuclear case by diplomatic means, warning force will have severe consequences for regional security.

An official statement said the king told visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Manushehr Mottaki Wednesday that Jordan hopes to make the Middle East a region free from weapons of mass destruction.

Abdullah stressed that possession of nuclear energy should be ruled by the criterion of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the statement said, noting that Manushehr assured the Jordanian monarch of Tehran's keenness to possess nuclear energy and not weapons of mass destruction.

Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Abdel Rahman Attiya relayed to King Abdullah the concerns of oil-rich Gulf countries regarding the Iranian nuclear program.

Attiya, who is also visiting Amman, underscored the importance of multiplying efforts to contain the crisis with Iran to avert its possible adverse impact on the Gulf states and the region as a whole.
