GCC seeks Iran nuke assurances

BEIRUT, Lebanon, May 10 (UPI) -- Gulf Cooperation Council chief Abdel Rahman Attiya called on Iran to assure its Arab neighbors about its controversial nuclear program.

Attiya, who is visiting Lebanon, said after a meeting with Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh Wednesday that the GCC appreciates Iran's efforts to assure the world about its peaceful nuclear program.

"But we hope our Iranian brothers will provide more assurances regarding possible technical problems, God forbid, because that will harm the whole Gulf region as well as the Iranians," Attiya said.

Attiya supported Iran's bid to enrich uranium for peaceful objectives, saying "it is the most important project for all countries -- including Iran -- in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency."

"We hope Iran will make extra efforts to assure its neighbors as well as the whole world about its bid to secure more prosperity and welfare of the region," he added.

He stressed that the GCC, which groups the six oil-rich Gulf countries -- Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and the United Arab Emirates -- has no specific agenda and will not accept that Iran be harmed.

"We hope the crisis of Iran's nuclear program will be resolved and the whole issue will be returned to the IAEA, where arrangements would be reached to ensure the nuclear plants are used for peaceful purposes," he added.
