The German government will finance the $2.5 million memorial to be built between the Reichstag parliament building and the Brandenburg Gate.

Sinti and Roma officials have said they are pleased that the genocide committed against the minority group would finally become recognized officially.

Information panels near the fountain-shaped memorial will display a chronology of the exclusion, persecution and annihilation of the Sinti and Roma, which is considered the second-largest genocide carried out by Nazis in Europe, following the killing of some 6 million Jews.
