Nepal recalls 12 ambassadors

KATHMANDU, Nepal, May 8 (UPI) -- Nepal has recalled its 12 ambassadors and dismissed all state political appointees put in place by King Gynanedra's government.

The Hindu newspaper said Monday that the Royal Nepalese ambassadors to New Delhi, Karna Dhoj Adhikari, and to Beijing, Narendra Raj Pandey, are among the 12 ambassadors who will be leaving for Kathmandu.

The Nepalese ambassadors to the United States, Britain, France, Japan, Pakistan, Russia and Myanmar are also among the envoys recalled.

"Dozens of top executives from various public enterprises and state bodies who were appointed after King Gyanendra's royal coup on Feb. 1, 2005, have to leave their job," said a statement released by the new Nepalese government.

The seven-party alliance government, led by veteran politician Girija Prasad Koirala, came to power two weeks ago after the king bowed before a popular pro-democracy movement that brought millions of people to the streets of Nepal, demanding the restoration of democracy.

A Nepalese official said the new government is expected to focus next on the country's security forces, which were widely accused of using unnecessary violence and aggression on peaceful protesters during the anti-monarchy movement.

Twenty-one people have now died as a result of the pro-democracy movement, following the deaths of two protesters at a local hospital in Kathmandu.

In a meeting Sunday, the Nepalese Cabinet discussed treatment of those injured during the struggle. Interior Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula said the government would take the injured abroad for treatment, if needed.
