India against changes to U.S. nuke deal

NEW DELHI, May 4 (UPI) -- Faced with the prospect of amendments to the Indo-U.S. civilian nuclear agreement, India has said it is against any changes to the deal.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told a group of visiting Indian parliamentarians that amendments to the July 18, 2005 joint statement were possible, The Hindu newspaper reported Friday.

"There had been no change in the Indian position as articulated in the July 2005 agreement," Navtej Sarna, Indian foreign office spokesman, said when asked to respond to comments attributed to Rice by an opposition lawmaker.

Under the terms of the deal, which has yet to be passed by the U.S. Congress, the United States will supply India with uranium for use in its civilian nuclear installations. India has agreed to split its civilian and military nuclear installations for the purposes of the deal.

Sarna also rejected a newspaper report that India had been approached by Britain to send troops to Afghanistan: "There is no such proposal," he said.
