BERLIN, May 3 (UPI) -- A massive force of left-wing radicals may try to disturb the Group of Eight summit 2007 in Heiligendamm, Germany, according to a top security official.
"(The G8 summit) will be the playing field of left-wing extremists," Deputy Interior Minister August Hanning on Wednesday told the foreign press corps in Berlin.
Hanning until late 2005 headed the German Federal Intelligence Service, or BND.
Several far-left groups have announced they will stage some of the biggest anti-globalization protests yet in the wake of the meeting.
Heiligendamm, a Baltic Sea resort in Mecklenburg Western-Pomerania, was chosen by German Chancellor Angela Merkel as the venue for the 2007 annual G8 summit. The summit will take place in a spectacular hotel complex dating back to the late 18th century.
Germany in the first half of 2007 also claims the European Union presidency.
