Jordan king: Next 2 years decisive for ME

AMMAN, Jordan, May 2 (UPI) -- Jordan's King Abdullah said the next two years will be decisive for the Middle East, warning against failure to achieve a just Israeli-Palestinian settlement.

Speaking Tuesday to senior members of the Council for International Understanding which holds its annual meeting at Jordan's Dead Sea resort, Abdullah said Jordan and Egypt are trying to help Palestinians and Israelis to revive the peace process which has been deadlocked for several years.

The official Petra News Agency quoted the monarch as saying in case no settlement was reached in the next two years "people of the region will not be able to live in peace, stability and security."

Ingmar Carlson, the president of CIU, an independent international group set up in 1983 to help settle international conflicts, said he hopes the conference will come out with recommendations that help find solutions to the region's problems, especially between Israel and the Palestinians and in Iraq.

Carlson, who twice served as Sweden's prime minister, noted some problems facing the Middle East that are of great worldwide influence: The Israeli-Palestinian conflict, developments in Iraq, concerns over the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in Iran and the continuing rise of oil prices.
