Aid to the Palestinians, woman slain in WB

GAZA, May 1 (UPI) -- Arab medical and food assistance were conveyed to the Palestinians suffering from isolation as violence continued unabated in the occupied territories.

A convoy of 27 trucks carrying Jordanian assistance crossed into Gaza Monday through the commercial Karni crossing to help alleviate serious shortages in medical supplies and food items.

Jordan's ambassador to the Palestinian Authority Yehya Karala said "the assistance consists of medical and food items and is carried by 27 trucks, 17 of which will be unloaded in Gaza and 10 in the West Bank."

He said the assistance, the third to be conveyed by Jordan within a month, was decided "after we were informed of the health problems facing our brothers the Palestinians and the medical shortages in hospitals."

Karala also called on other Arab countries who can afford to assist the Palestinians to act immediately in order to alleviate their sufferings.

In another development, a woman was killed by Israeli army fire and two of her daughters were injured Monday during an incursion into the West Bank city of Tulkarem with the aim of arresting Palestinian activists.

An Israeli army source identified the victim as Itaf Zalat. He said the troops infiltrated the city to capture Islamic Jihad activist Iyad Abdullah and the husband of one of the victim's daughters.

The source said the troops encircled a house under the pretext that Abdullah was hiding inside, but the inhabitants refused to come out. He claimed that soldiers opened fire when they intercepted "suspicious movements" inside.

Zalat died later in hospital from grave wounds.
